Job Overview:

To lead the technical management of a fleet of tugs and barges, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and compliance with maritime standards.

This role involves overseeing a team of technical superintendents and port engineers, managing budgets, and implementing effective maintenance and operational strategies.

 The Technical Manager plays a pivotal role in maintaining the fleet’s technical integrity while fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

 

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

1. Technical Management

    • Develop and oversee the implementation of maintenance and repair plans for the fleet.
    • Ensure the operational readiness of all vessels by addressing technical issues promptly.
    • Monitor and improve the technical performance of the fleet to meet operational requirements and standards.
    • Evaluate and approve technical solutions for complex maintenance or repair challenges.

2. Team Leadership and Management

    • Lead and manage a team of technical superintendents and port engineers, ensuring clear responsibilities and accountability.
    • Provide mentorship and training to enhance team capabilities and technical expertise.
    • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for the technical team and regularly assess performance.
    • Foster a culture of teamwork, safety, and operational excellence within the technical management department.

3. Budget and Cost Control

    • Develop and manage the technical department's budget, ensuring cost efficiency without compromising quality or safety.
    • Monitor expenses related to maintenance, repairs, and spare parts procurement.
    • Identify opportunities for cost-saving while maintaining the reliability and performance of the fleet.

4. Safety and Compliance

    • Ensure all vessels comply with applicable maritime regulations and safety standards.
    • Oversee safety audits, inspections, and drills, promoting a safety-conscious culture across the fleet.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of regulatory certifications, surveys, and inspections.

5. Stakeholder Collaboration

    • Collaborate closely with the Head of Ship Management, operations teams, and other key stakeholders.
    • Act as a liaison between technical teams and vessel crews to address operational challenges effectively.
    • Maintain strong relationships with classification societies, regulatory authorities, and vendors.

6. Strategic Planning

    • Contribute to long-term planning for fleet development, including identifying and implementing technological improvements.
    • Support major projects such as dry docking and newbuilding by providing technical expertise and oversight.
    • Regularly review and update maintenance strategies to align with organizational objectives and industry trends.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) or equivalent qualification.
  • Extensive experience as a Chief Engineer onboard tugs or sea-going vessels.
  • Proven track record in technical ship management, including hands-on maintenance and repair expertise.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience overseeing technical superintendents and engineers.
  • In-depth understanding of maritime regulations, safety standards, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent budget management and cost control capabilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to address technical challenges effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal teams, vessel crews, and external stakeholders.
